As descendants of Jim and Winnie Shankle and their nine children, Mary McBride, Tobe Perkins, Rollins, George Shankle, Houston Shankle, Harriett Odom, B.M. Lewis, Henry Shankle and John Shankle, we are all aware of the great love story! Jim was a true and proud pioneer who had a great imagination and insight for the future generations to come. Whether you have the last name Rollins, Perkins, McBride or Shankle, by blood we are all related.
Shankleville was established around 1870 by Jim Shankle and Steve McBride who purchased approximately 4,000 acres of land. Shortly after the purchase Jim and the other pioneers began a strong and prosperous community. This was a true milestone. I am sure the early settlers had many obstacles to overcome in the early years and yet they persevered with sweat and determination.
Through the years time has changed the landscape and the vision those early pioneers saw has dwindled. We are now at a crossroad and all living descendants of those settlers have to face some hard decisions. Our history is about to be erased. Everything our ancestors worked so hard for will soon become a memory in a history book, on the shelf in a library, somewhere in Texas.
A positive alternative is to preserve our history and become today's pioneers for future generations to follow. This will not be an easy feat. We need your help!
The Shankle Family Reunion is taking the responsibility to preserve Shankleville's rich history. We are asking all descendants of Jim and Winnie and the early settlers to band together at the family reunions and assist in preserving our heritage. One brick at a time we can and will build a new Community Center and preserve some of the historical sights in this area for generations of today and tomorrow to enjoy. This is not the end of the love story, just chapter two. We can all make history together as the early pioneers did.
We want to thank you in advance for your support and we look forward to our next meeting. Remember ---
FROM TWO CAME ME AND YOU!!!
As you encounter our relatives throughout your days, inquire if they have seen this letter. It is imperative to know our relatives and celebrate our unique heritage with each other and our children.
